Summer Rides Are Awesome—Until They’re Not: How to Stay Safe in the Heat

There’s a certain kind of stubborn that gets you out riding in July when the pavement’s cooking and the humidity feels personal. We get it—we do it too. But La Crosse summers aren’t always chill (literally), and hot-weather riding needs a little strategy.
Here’s how to keep riding strong through the heat—without bonking halfway up the bluff or regretting that extra five miles.

Hydration First, Always
This isn’t just “bring a bottle.” This is drink before you’re thirsty, carry more than you think you need, and consider adding electrolytes if you’re riding longer than an hour.
We recommend:
One bottle per hour (minimum)
Stashing a second bottle in a frame bag or side cage
Throwing in a Nuun or Skratch tab for longer loops
Need a bottle cage setup or a hydration pack for longer routes? We’ve got both. Check out our gear and sales page or swing in to get fitted for one that won’t bounce around.
Plan Smart Routes
Shaded trails like the La Crosse River State Trail or Myric Marsh can be a lifesaver in full sun. Aim for early mornings or evenings if you can. Midday rides? We don’t recommend unless you love the smell of asphalt.
Looking for cooler loops or bailout options with water stops? Check out the Bike La Crosse ride guide or stop by the shop. We’ll help you map something realistic.
Dress for the Weather You’re In
Go light. Go breathable. Go with something that’s not cotton. Loose-fitting or sweat-wicking fabric makes a massive difference—especially on climbs or stops.
Need a good summer riding kit? We’ve got a few heat-tested picks in store, plus gloves and caps that won’t turn your head into a furnace.
Know When to Pull the Plug
Overheating isn’t “toughing it out.” It’s dangerous. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or like you’ve stopped sweating—get off the bike, find shade, and cool down.
Ride with friends, carry a phone, and don’t be afraid to stop. There’s no shame in a half-ride when it’s 90 and climbing.
Don’t Let the Heat Win
Hot weather rides can be amazing—quiet trails, golden hour light, cold drinks at the end. But they’re better when you’re not struggling the whole way.
