Fall Biking in La Crosse: Tips for the Best Autumn Rides

There’s something about biking in La Crosse in the fall that feels almost too good to be real. The air is crisp, the bugs are finally gone, and the bluffs light up in reds and golds like a postcard. Whether you’re commuting to class, taking a weekend spin, or chasing miles before winter sets in, fall might just be the best season to ride.

Here’s how to make the most of it.

Pick the Right Routes for Autumn

The classics are even better this time of year.

  • La Crosse River State Trail: Flat, tree-lined, and stunning when the leaves turn. Great for long, steady rides.

  • Grandad Bluff Loop: Challenging climb, unbeatable views of the city surrounded by fall color.

  • Goose Island Spin: Gentle miles and Mississippi River views—perfect for a relaxed weekend outing.

Not sure where to head? Our Bike La Crosse guide has maps and route ideas for every level of rider.

Dress for Layered Weather

Mornings can start in the 40s and afternoons can push into the 70s. The trick is layers. A moisture-wicking base layer, a packable jacket, and lightweight gloves keep you comfortable no matter what the day throws at you.

We stock fall cycling gear that’s tested for Wisconsin riding—affordable, durable, and student-friendly.

Get Your Bike Fall-Ready

Cooler weather means different riding conditions. Tires, brakes, and chains all deserve a quick check before you roll.

  • Tires: Look for cracks, tread wear, or soft spots.

  • Brakes: Shorter days = more wet leaves = you need strong stopping power.

  • Chain: Wipe it down and lube more often with all the fall grit on the roads.

Want peace of mind? Book a seasonal tune-up and we’ll handle the details.

Plan for Shorter Days

The sun drops earlier than you think in October. Even if you’re heading out in daylight, bring lights just in case. A bright front light and solid rear blinky make sure you’re seen on busy roads and campus paths.

We’ve got rechargeable lights in stock that fit perfectly on e-bikes, commuters, and trikes. Stop in and test them before your next ride.

Extend the Season With an E-Bike or Trike

Fall is also prime time to test an electric ride. Addmotor trikes are perfect for stability and cargo if you’re running errands or carrying gear. Aventon and Velotric e-bikes shine for commuting or longer loops, while folding Blaupunkt bikes make sense for students with tight storage.

Most of the models we carry run 20–60 miles per charge, plenty for La Crosse routes. And no license is required for Class 1 or 2 e-bikes in Wisconsin.

Curious? Come in for a test ride and see how an e-bike or trike can keep you riding further into the season.

Don’t Waste the Best Riding of the Year

Fall doesn’t last forever, but the rides you squeeze in now are often the ones you’ll remember most. Crisp mornings, golden afternoons, and quiet trails—it’s La Crosse at its best.
