Bluff to Beach: Three Scenic Day Rides Around La Crosse

La Crosse is kind of a dream if you’re into bikes. You’ve got bluffs, backroads, river trails, city routes, even a few secret shortcuts if you know where to look. And the best part? You don’t need to block out a whole weekend to enjoy it. Some of the best rides around here can be knocked out in a single day—no hotel, no gear haul, just good legs and a decent snack supply.

Here are three of our favorite La Crosse-area day rides, tested (and sweat through) by your local Wrench & Roll crew.

1. Grandad Bluff to Riverside Loop (Approx. 16 miles)

Start with a little climb—we promise it’s worth it. Head up to Grandad Bluff via Main Street and Bliss Road, take in the views, and then coast back down toward Riverside Park. From there, follow the river path south toward Myrick Park and loop back through downtown.

Good for: Hybrids, road bikes, e-bikesPack: Water, windbreaker, and maybe a snack for the overlookWatch for: Tourists and distracted drivers near the bluff overlook

Need help adjusting gears before the climb? We’ve got you. Book a tune-up or service before you ride.

2. Goose Island Spin (Approx. 25–30 miles depending on your loop)

Take South Avenue out of town, then veer onto County Road GI and head toward Goose Island County Park. It’s a chill ride with river views, bird-watching potential, and a great little picnic spot if you want to make a day of it.

Good for: Gravel bikes, hybrids, comfort cruisersPack: Bug spray, sunscreen, and something for the saddleOptional: Camp overnight and turn it into a micro-adventure

If you need to rent a ride for this one, check out our bike rentals. We’ve got solid options ready to roll.

3. Winona Connector (Approx. 40+ miles, but worth it)

Feeling ambitious? This is one of those “get up early, pack sandwiches” type rides. Head north through Onalaska and follow the Great River Road to Winona, MN. Stop for lunch, snap a few photos on the bridge, then loop back the same way.

Good for: Road bikes, touring setups, e-bikes with solid rangePack: Backup snacks, card or cash, lights for dusk returnPro tip: Ride out on low-traffic weekdays if you can

If you’re running an e-bike and worried about range, swing by for a battery health check before you go.

Riding Local, the Wrench & Roll Way

You don’t need a plane ticket or a tent to have a two-wheeled adventure. La Crosse has plenty right here: river paths, country roads, and that feeling of leaving your routine behind, even if it’s just for a few hours.

Not sure your bike’s ready for it?

Come see us. We’ll make sure your brakes work, your tires are solid, and your ride doesn’t throw a fit halfway up the bluff. Or just swing by to talk route ideas. We’re into that too.
