Fall riding around here is next level. Crisp air, changing leaves, and just enough cool to keep you pedaling longer. Whether you’re chasing views from the bluff or gliding through a tunnel of golden trees, La Crosse has some incredible routes to explore before winter sets in.

Here are three rides we recommend for peak autumn vibes.

ree

1. Grandad Bluff Loop

Start downtown, climb Bliss Road to Grandad Bluff, and enjoy panoramic views of fall colors before coasting back down. Bring a camera—this view never gets old, and it’s one of the best leaf-peeping spots in the area.

Good for: Road bikes, hybrids, e-bikes with solid battery life.

Bonus: Stop for coffee on the way back into town.

Need your bike tuned before tackling the climb? Book a seasonal service so you’re not stuck halfway up.

2. La Crosse River State Trail

Flat, scenic, and tree-lined—perfect for soaking up peak leaf season. The trail stretches toward Sparta, so you can make this ride as long or short as you want.

Good for: Any bike type, including cruisers and rentals.Best time: Morning rides for low traffic and crisp air.

If you don’t have a bike ready for the trail, check out our bike rentals.

3. Goose Island Spin

'Gentle miles with Mississippi River views, ideal for a relaxed afternoon ride. Wildlife sightings are common, and the light on the water at sunset is unbeatable.

Good for: Gravel bikes, hybrids, touring setups.

Pro tip: Pack a thermos of something warm and enjoy it by the shoreline.

Timing Your Ride for Peak ColorIn La Crosse, peak leaf season often falls in early-to-mid October. Morning rides offer crisp air and golden light, while late afternoons bring deeper color and warmer temps. Keep an eye on the forecast—windy days can strip trees faster than you’d expect.

Gear for Fall Routes

Shorter days mean it’s smart to carry lights, even for midday rides. Pack a light windbreaker, gloves, and layers that can be removed if the afternoon warms up. We carry a range of fall cycling gear designed for Midwest riding.

Fall Riding at Its Best

This is the season to ride a little slower, stop a little more, and take in the scenery. Whether it’s a quick loop or an all-day adventure, La Crosse is at its most beautiful right now.
