The Right Way to Wash Your Bike at Home

A clean bike isn’t just about looks—it runs smoother, lasts longer, and is a lot nicer to work on. But grab the wrong tools (or too much water pressure) and you could do more harm than good.

Here’s how to wash your bike without ruining it.

What You’ll Need:

  • Bucket of warm water + mild soap

  • Soft brush + old toothbrush

  • Clean rags

  • Bike-specific degreaser

  • Chain lube

Step 1: Rinse Gently

Use low-pressure water or a spray bottle to loosen dirt. No garden hose blasting straight into bearings.

Step 2: Scrub the Frame

Work from the top down, using a soft brush for the frame and wheels. Save the drivetrain for last.

Step 3: Degrease the Drivetrain

Apply degreaser to the chain, cassette, and chainrings. Use your old toothbrush to scrub away built-up gunk.

Step 4: Dry and Lube

Wipe the bike dry, then add chain lube (wipe off the excess). You’re done.
