How to Store Your Bike So It’s Ready Next Season

Not every rider in La Crosse keeps pedaling through the cold months. If you’re packing your bike away for winter—or just taking a long break—how you store it makes a huge difference. Skip these steps and you could be dealing with flat tires, rusted chains, or squeaky brakes when you pull it out again.

Here’s how to store your bike for the season so it’s ready to roll the moment spring arrives.

Clean Before You Store

Dust, dirt, and road salt are bad news if left sitting. Give your bike a thorough wash, wipe down the drivetrain, and apply a light coat of lube to the chain.

Need supplies? We stock bike-friendly cleaners and lubes that keep your ride protected while it sits.

Keep the Tires Inflated

If a bike sits on soft tires, flat spots can form and weaken the rubber. Inflate to your usual pressure before storage and top them up every few weeks if you can.

If you’re storing long-term, consider hanging the bike or using a stand to take weight off the wheels.

Store Somewhere Dry and Safe

Moisture is the enemy. Basements, garages, or indoor spaces are best. If you must store outside, invest in a waterproof cover. Keep it off cold concrete floors by using a mat or wood block.

Protect the Drivetrain

A light coat of lube on your chain, cassette, and chainrings will prevent rust. Just don’t overdo it—excess oil collects dust. Wipe off any extra after applying.

Quick Spring Tune-Up

Even with perfect storage, bikes can shift a little while sitting. Cables stretch, brake pads dry, and tires age. Before your first ride back, schedule a spring tune-up. We’ll check brakes, gears, tires, and lube everything so you’re ready for the season.

Pro Tips for La Crosse Riders

  • Driftless humidity is tough on bikes—indoor storage is worth it.

  • For e-bikes, remove the battery and store it at room temperature.
