How to Store Your Bike Between Rides (and Keep It Ready for the Next One)

You’re out riding a few times a week. Maybe commuting. Maybe hitting the La Crosse River trails or heading out toward Onalaska on the weekends. Either way, your bike’s not in hibernation—but it still spends a lot of time parked.

We see it all the time at Wrench & Roll. Bikes that were working fine… until they sat for a couple of weeks in the wrong spot, picked up a little grime, and started acting up. You don’t need a pro mechanic every time you hang up your helmet. But you do need a few smart habits.

Here’s how to store your bike during the riding season—whether it’s a daily commuter or a weekend-only ride.

1. Store It Clean (Or At Least Not Filthy)

Mud, dust, and sweat do more damage when they sit. Give your bike a quick wipe-down after wet or dusty rides, especially the drivetrain and brake surfaces. It doesn’t have to be a deep clean. Just a rag and a few minutes can save you a lot of wear.

If cleaning isn’t your thing, bring it by for a quick service. We’ll get the grime off without the hassle.

2. Keep the Tires Inflated

Tires naturally lose air over time. If you let them sit low, you risk pinch flats or cracked sidewalls—especially in La Crosse’s changing temps.

Check tire pressure every week or two. Top them off even if you’re not riding daily. And if your tires are holding air badly, it’s time for a new tube or sealant.

Not sure what pressure’s right for you? We’ll help you figure it out or check out our sales page for pumps and gauges we actually use ourselves.

3. Lube the Chain Once It’s Dry

A little chain lube every few rides keeps things quiet and smooth. Especially after wet rides or gravel grinds.Apply sparingly, wipe off the extra, and you’re good.

We stock lube that works for Midwest riding. Stop in and we’ll point you in the right direction.

4. Store It Indoors If You Can (Or Covered If You Can’t)

Garage, shed, mudroom—anywhere dry and shaded is better than baking in the sun or sitting in the rain. UV rays and moisture wear on your frame, tires, and seat.If you have to leave it outside, invest in a decent cover or lock it up somewhere protected.

We can help you find a solid cover or storage option. Check out what we carry in-store or come by for advice.

5. Check It Over Every Few Weeks

A quick once-over while you’re pumping tires or wiping the frame can catch small problems before they get big.

  • Brakes still tight?

  • Gears shifting smoothly?

  • Nothing wobbling, squeaking, or feeling off?

Spot something weird? Bring it in and we’ll take a look.

Your Bike Works Better When You Take Care of It (So Do You)

Smart storage isn’t about fancy gear or extra work. It’s about keeping your ride ready when you want it—whether that’s tomorrow morning or next weekend’s group ride.
