How to Prep Your Bike for Fall Riding in La Crosse

Fall is one of the best times to ride in La Crosse—cool mornings, golden afternoons, and trails lined with color. But autumn also brings new challenges: damp leaves, shorter days, and cooler temps that test your bike as much as they test your legs.

At Wrench & Roll, we see a lot of riders come in during September and October with the same issues: squeaky brakes, worn tires, and chains that sound like haunted house doors. The good news? A little fall maintenance keeps your bike rolling smoothly all season.

Here’s what to check before you hit the trails.

1. Tires: Grip Matters More Now

Leaves + moisture = slippery. If your tires are bald or cracking, swap them out before your next ride. For commuters, consider wider tires for stability. For trail riders, a little extra tread goes a long way.

Not sure what’s right for your bike? Browse our sales floor or ask in-store—we’ll match you with something that fits your riding style and budget.

2. Brakes: Don’t Gamble With Stopping Power

Wet conditions and leaf-covered roads put more demand on your brakes. Check your pads—if they’re thin or uneven, replace them. If your lever pulls all the way back, your cables or fluid need attention.

We handle brake adjustments and pad swaps every day and can get you back on the road quickly.

3. Chain and Drivetrain: Clean and Lube Often

Fall grit builds up fast. Wipe your chain after wet rides and reapply lube regularly. A quiet chain is a happy chain—and one that won’t wear out your cassette before spring.

Need help? We’ll show you how to do it yourself, or we can clean it up for you in the shop.

4. Lights and Visibility: Shorter Days Are Here

Evening classes, late commutes, and long rides don’t always end in daylight this time of year. A bright front light and reliable rear blinky are essentials.

We stock rechargeable, e-bike-compatible lights that last longer and keep you visible on campus, on the trail, or heading back from Goose Island.

5. Battery Check for E-Bikes and Trikes

If you’re riding an Aventon, Addmotor, Velotric, Blaupunkt, or JackRabbit, remember: cooler temps shorten battery range. Test your usual route and see how much charge you have left. Most of our models get 20–60 miles per charge, but range can drop slightly in the fall.

Bring your e-bike or trike in for a quick battery diagnostic before you plan a long ride.

Ride Into Fall With Confidence

Fall is one of the best seasons to be on two (or three) wheels in La Crosse. A little extra maintenance now keeps your rides safe, fun, and stress-free.
